Lagrein is a meaty, savory red variety that thrives in the Sudtirol-Alto Adige region of northeastern Italy. Mineral and dusty in style and medium-bodied in weight, this sustainably grown example from Weingut Niklas reads like a ripe Loire Valley Cabernet Franc with its earthy undertones, deep red cherry fruit, and sanguine, almost gastronomic notes of roasted meat. This was brought up in neutral barrel, but isn't oaky in the slightest.
